In 2012, Trish Newsom had the God-given opportunity to run the 2012 Boston Marathon with Team Hoyt. “Team Hoyt is an inspirational story of a father, Dick Hoyt, and his son, Rick, who compete together in marathons and triathlons across the country. Team Hoyt strives to help those who are physically disabled become active members of the community.” as described on their website www.teamhoyt.com.
On December 2, 2011, Trish received the news she would be running as a member of Team Hoyt as a charity runner. The dream to run this marathon had been 10 years in the making for Trish. Trish qualified for the Boston Marathon on September 4, 2011 at the Tupelo, Mississippi Marathon. She missed qualifying on June 5, 2011 in San Diego, California by 53 seconds. Her second attempt was successful in time, but not in performance.
The Boston Marathon is the holy grail for runners. New performance standards were put in place in 2012 due to the amount of runners trying to enter the race. Once qualified and entered, runners have to wait and see if they receive a spot based on their performance. It is compared to all others in their age group. Trish missed this standard by 13 seconds. Knowing God was in control, she waited and knew there was a reason for the wait. Romans 8.28 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Hebrews 11.1 states, “Faith is being sure of what you hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Trish had faith and hope that Boston was her race in 2012. This is where Team Hoyt comes in. They offered her a spot to run on their team as a charity runner. This was an answered prayer. Trish learned about Team Hoyt while leading a Run for God Bible study. Her hope had been answered. She was a Team Hoyt member and would be running the 2012 Boston Marathon. The reason for the wait was to ensure God received the glory for making the impossible possible. Luke 1.37 – “ For nothing is impossible with God.”
As a Team Hoyt member, Trish had to raise $5000 for the Hoyt Foundation. Trish’s running angels, Bayside Baptist Church’s Run for God Bible Study group, helped in a mighty way with the fund-raising. The inaugural Run with Trish 5k for Team Hoyt was planned and held on March 10, 2012 to help raise the funds. It was a HUGE success…a first class event for sure!
On September 6, 2012, Team Hoyt extended another invitation to Trish to run the 2013 Boston Marathon. Trish has graciously accepted the offer and is planning once again. So, the 2nd Annual Run with Trish 5k for Team Hoyt is officially in the works. March 9th is the projected date. Stay tuned for the secure date. This year it will be bigger and better. Stay tuned! We are excited to once again follow along on this God-given journey. Won’t you join us??
